Holi is the ancient festival of India and was originally known as ‘Holika’. Historians also believe that Holi was celebrated by all Aryans but more so in the Eastern part of India. However, the meaning of the festival is believed to have changed over the years. Earlier it was a special rite performed by married women for the happiness and well-being of their families and the full moon (Raka) was worshipped.   • It is a two-day festival. The first day is the bonfire night which is known as ‘Holika Dahan’ which is known as ‘Choti Holi’ and the second day is when the main celebration with colours takes place.
  • It symbolises unity and brotherhood.

Hampi Temple
  • The festival of Holi also finds a reference in the sculptures on walls of old temples. A 16th-century panel sculpted in a temple at Hampi, the capital of Vijayanagar, shows a joyous scene of Holi. The painting depicts a Prince and his Princess standing amidst maids waiting with syringes or pichkaris to drench the Royal couple in coloured water.
  • It is celebrated after the full moon in the month of ‘Phalguna’ which generally falls between February and March.
  • The festival of Holi is predominantly a festival of fun. People spend a lot of their time during the festival days engaging in fun activities.
